The CO₂ Performance Ladder by SKAO (Foundation for Climate Friendly Procurement and Business) helps companies prove their climate performance and gain an advantage in government tenders. Over 8,000 organisations enrolled. 300+ contracting authorities relying on the data being accurate, current, and accessible.

The previous system was built for a smaller scale. As the programme grew, administration and invoicing became harder to manage. Processing certificates was manual. Each one reviewed by hand, details entered one by one. The system couldn't keep up with the volume and the certification requirements kept expanding.

We replaced the entire legacy system. Registration, certification tracking, reporting, invoicing with automated payments through Mollie, real-time sync to the public website.

Then we built something they didn't know was possible.

Certificates submitted by organisations used to be reviewed entirely by hand. We built an OCR system that automatically captures all information on a certificate and processes it. SKAO's team now only has to check the results instead of entering everything manually. That alone saves hours every week and lets them gather more detail from each certificate than they could before.

For the 8,000+ certificateholders, an interactive version of the CO₂ Performance Ladder handbook was developed. Instead of reading a static document and guessing what applies to them, organisations now get guided through the steps needed for certification with explanations, examples and definitions along the way.

SKAO's team can now change automated emails, handbook content, explanations, images and definitions themselves. No developer ticket. No waiting. They update it and it's live. That kind of independence is something most organisations don't know they can ask for until they have it.

We recently also delivered a measure list application with benchmarking capabilities, so organisations can see how their performance compares.
